Helping Students Understand Politics Before They’re Expected to Navigate It

Amicus Youth is a student-led nonprofit working to make civic and political literacy a more prominent part of American education. We help students understand government, law, economics, public policy, political ideologies, media, and civic institutions, not by telling them what to believe, but by giving them the knowledge and critical-thinking skills to form their own informed opinions.

The Problem

Students are expected to have political opinions before they are taught how politics works.

Politics affects nearly every part of students’ lives, including their education, rights, healthcare, communities, economic opportunities, and future.

Yet many students graduate without fully understanding how laws are created, how governments function, how political and economic systems differ, or how to evaluate the political information they encounter online. Students should learn politics before they are expected to choose politics.

Amicus Youth is working to make political education as fundamental as financial literacy, science, history, and mathematics.

What we teach

Political Literacy

How governments, elections, political parties, ideologies, economic systems, international organizations, and public policies work.

Constitutional rights, civil rights, voting rights, courts, juvenile law, employment, consumer protection, contracts, and the process through which laws are created and challenged.

Students learn how to participate responsibly in their schools, communities, and government. Activities include mock legislatures, policy research, public-comment writing, and more
